SWIBN November Event: ‘Letting Go’ – The hardest part is making the decision… then you just get the best deal you can!

Hello ladies!

The time has come for another SWIBN monthly event! This month we’ll be joined by Niamh O’Brien who will be giving us an honest account of how she reached the decision to sell her business and how she finally did it in 2016.

Hailing from Laois and now living in the hills of Leitrim with her daughter Annie, Niamh was one of the first three students in Ireland to qualify with the newly introduced BA in Fashion Design from the Limerick School of Art and Design. That same year she won the highly coveted Design Council of Ireland £4,000 study award and continued her studies in the UK where she completed a research master’s degree in Clothing and Textiles Studies at De Montfort University in Leicestershire. Niamh’s career took off when she took up the post of assistant designer with Magee Menswear in Donegal Town where she was introduced to the commercial side of the clothing industry and gained vast experience in the production and marketing of men’s and ladies wear for both the indigenous and export markets.

In 1998 Niamh joined her husband Lorcan in his Retail Barcode Scanning business JustScan, in Sligo town as trainer and interface designer. She quickly moved into an Operations function as the team grew and the business expanded nationwide. Following the untimely death of Lorcan to heart cancer in 2006, Niamh took over running the business on a day to day basis supported by a very loyal, small team of experienced people.

In 2016, Niamh sold the business and is now working as a business consultant, facilitator and mentor which she thoroughly enjoys.

SWIBN June Event – Brand Development

Hello Ladies!

A brand new month brings with it a brand new SWIBN main event! This month, we’ll be joined by Aisling Flanagan of Velvet Cloud. Back in 2015, Aisling set up Rockfield Dairy, a specialist sheep dairy product business, on the farm owned by her family. The products include sheep’s milk, cheese and yoghurt, sold under the Velvet Cloud brand. The farm was the first – and still is the only – sheep dairy farm in Ireland producing milk on a year-round basis.

Aisling identified a market opportunity for a range of Irish sheep’s milk dairy products when food trends were changing in 2015 which led to her setting up the business. In Ireland Velvet Cloud is now on sale in over 80 retail outlets, and enjoys a significant high end foodservice business, featuring on the menus of some of the best chefs in the country including five Michelin star restaurants. In2016 Velvet Cloud was announced as Euro-Toque winners for Excellence & Innovation in Dairy. The company is now exporting to London, and plans to develop exports further in the UK and to commence exporting to the UAE.

Aisling joins us so she can impart everything she has learned from this seriously impressive business journey that she’s been on. As many SWIBNers are trading in the food business, this evening will be very informative for a lot of us.
